Well, feeling like a bucket of shite again. I’ve been plagued by a re-occurring cold for the past couple of months. This weekend it turned decidedly flu like. Been feeling like a pile of wank these last two days – cant breathe, and when i do my throat feels like I’ve just inhaled broken glass, and my body cant decide if i am overheating or getting hypothermia.

Its an exciting time though, despite the lergy. Joined a band recently – just realised I haven’t blogged about it yet. I’m playing bass for Infinite Loop, an alternative/indie band fronted by Spanish singer/songwriter Gorka de la Camara. Gorkas songs are excellent, and the other guys, Thor S on guitars and Arne H on drums, are really talented musicians and make me feel like a bit of a fraud. Been playing together for about a month now, and its really starting to sound good. Damn exciting.

Started my new job at Rubberduck Media Lab last week. Thats going well – nice people, and much more organised and professional than my previous job. Have lots to learn though, so aren’t feeling like i’m contributing much at the moment, but I suppose thats to be expected.

Went skiing last weekend. Sigurd and Marie treated us to a day on the slopes at Norefjell for my christmas pressy. Decided to try out snowblades (or wankerskis as my brother likes to call them). Had a seriously brilliant time, and am itching to get back on the slopes again now. Had planned on buying some snowblades yesterday, but what with the lergy it hasn’t happened yet. I’m really glad we bought a house opposite a ski slope now

And of course theres the arrival of Igneous, our wee puppy, in a few weeks, just in case things weren’t exciting enough.

But enough of exciting things.. I’m going back to bed, try and get some sleep and get myself well again. Don’t think sleep is gonna come easy tonight though….

Sat writing this on my new iPod touch while enjoying a cold drink in a wee cafe overlooking dry stoney hills just north of Dubrovnic Arrived in Croatia yesterday and already my shoulders have dropped several centermeters. The weather is fantastc here – big blue skies, warm and sunny!

Had a busy and tiring but quite productive few days moving in to our new house last week. Leif and Astrid helped Ollie, Matt and myself with the move (thanks guys!), and so it only took us Monday to shift in. Getting everything unpacked took us the rest of the week and we’ve still only done downstairs. We bought our first washing machine, a fridge and a ton of stuff from Ikea, some of which still needs to be put together.
We are chuffed to bits with our house It has lower ceilings than our previous place (which was a flat in a building built in the 1880s), and this makes it feel a bit more warm and cosy. Our new furnature, all our plants, a fire roaring away in the fireplace and a brilliant view of nice sunsets from our living room also helps of course

The other big bit of news is that I have got a new job. It is with a small company called Rubberduck Media Lab and they develop software that streams TV and movies to mobile devices. I will be working in their R&D department doing Java development. Looks like a very cool place to work – nice people, exciting projects, plus it looks like I can install Linux on my laptop there Their offices are located right in the centre of town as well, on Karl Johans gata. Will be nice to be based in the main street, especially as we have just moved out of Oslo – the bus that goes from outside our new house will drop me off just round the corner from the offices. Will start there in Feburary next year.
Will be a shame to leave Viz though – will miss the people there.

Went up to Hønefoss for some playing in the rapids again yesterday evening. I was cold when I left work, so Hans lent me his dry suit top, which is good at keeping you dry and warm so long as you don’t capsize and go for a swim. Of course, I spent most of time swimming rather than kayaking. Still, the wrist seals worked so well that it took me 10 minutes to get my hands out of the suit afterward (i thought things were supposed to get smaller in cold water.. my hands decided to swell instead).

My brain remembered everything from the course we did a month or so back – right up to the point when we got into the current. Got swept sideways over the rapids at one stage, and to my amazement managed to stay upright, although this was the only time during the evening I managed to do so. My rubbishness I think was was a combination of me being physically knackered, as well as (understandably) crap technique – miracles shouldn’t be expected when this is only the third time we’ve been kayaking (ignoring for a moment our little adventure in New Zealand, and of course the two years we spent learning to kayak in school [it was almost 20 years ago - it doesn't count! And anyway, you really can't compare Symonds Yat with the kind of rivers they have here] ).

The one suprise for the evening was that I was toasty warm the whole time we were on the river. So much so that I have lost my fear of cold water and now want to get myself a dry suit and start diving regularly as well. And despite the kayaking to swimming ratio still being a bit one sided (for me at least – Ollie was much more in control), we enjoyed it so much that we have booked ourselves on a trip to a river a few hours drive away for the weekend

Svalbard is an island archipelago not far from the North Pole. Ollie and I were lucky enough to have been bought a trip there as a wedding present (thanks Leif and Astrid!), which we took recently. We first flew to Tromsø, a small town in the north of Norway, where we stayed for a night. Tromsø is a cool wee place, situated pretty much in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by mountains, fjords and lakes. We wandered through the town during the day, then settled in a bar where we polished off a bottle of wine for the evening. We even managed to find a nice Thai restaurant for dinner (after I had spent the day complaining bitterly about how rubbish eating out is in Norway).

The following morning we flew to Longyearbyen in Spitsbergen – the main town on the main island in the Svalbard archipelago. Landing in our wee plane, which was a lot less wee than I thought it would be, and full of people, I got my first glimpse of a ‘proper’ Arctic landscape. Since seeing Life in the Freezer back in the early 90s, I have dreamed of visiting the Arctic or Antarctic. It was so beautiful and exciting and managed to exceed all expectations that I had been harbouring for the past 15 odd years, as well as make me completely forget the hangover I had been nursing all morning. We got a bus into the town and to our hotel, which was not in the prettiest part of town, but very warm and cosy inside.

Considering its in such a remote, desolate and inhospitable place, Longyearbyen was suprisingly cosy and developed – it has several shops, a supermarket, a library, cinema (showing a film once a week) and several bars, cafes and restaurants. No-one actually comes from Longyearbyen. The average duration a person lives in the town is 2 years – and if you get pregnant on the island, you have to fly to the mainland and have the baby there. There is a big university teaching all manner of interesting subjects, and the state owned mining company, which employs many of the people living in the town, is actually making a profit for the first time in its history. You are not allowed to leave the town without a rifle, due to the fact that the surrounding countryside is full of polar bears.

We spent 5 days on the island. We took a snow scooter tour to the west coast, went dog sledging, ice caving and generally wandered around dressed like teddy-bears, most of the time with my jaw hanging open looking at the most incredible, most awe inspiring scenery I have ever seen. The day we spent on snow scooters had to be the highlight of the trip. We sped over ice and snow at up to 90km/hour, and managed to cover a distance of over 200km by the end of the day. We saw a polar bear over on the east coast, although he was out on the sea ice quite a distance away. But we saw him wandering about, doing his own thing, looking suprisingly yellow in amongst the bluey-white landscape.

The weather was great. We were there during the week the sun first comes back to Longyearbyen after months of winter darkness, so the days started with dawn, which hung around for a while, before skipping the middle of the day and going straight into dusk. My two favourite times of day are dawn and dusk, so this suited me quite well. The light was fantastic, giving everything a warm glow – at least, as warm a glow as you can get in the arctic. It was quite chilly – around -15′C most days with a nasty wind just in case -15 didn’t sound cold enough. The east coast, where we took the snow scooters, was decidedly colder – the Gulf Stream warms the west coast where Longyearbyen is situated, stopping the sea from freezing, and making it a slightly more pleasant place to live (the west coast is known as the ‘tropical arctic’). On the east coast, the sea is frozen and the temperature is bitterly cold.

I haven’t stopped being able to think about Svalbard since we returned to Oslo. I wouldn’t mind doing a masters degree at some stage, and I really couldn’t think of a better place to do it. Saying that, I think we were there at the best time of year. The girl that took us on the snow scooter trip remarked that the summer days are all the same – no dawn, dusk, no night time – and the winters are long, dark and depressing. Definately planning another trip there though – would be great to see the place in the summer. Photos from our trip can be found in the photos section.

Just got back from our honeymoon – a weeks liveaboard diving in the Red Sea. It was bloody excellent – we were on the Royal Evolution, a fantastic boat that took us out to the Brothers, Daedalus & Elphonstone reefs. Got to dive with a school of 15+ hammerhead sharks, eat good food and generally have an excellent time.
It was so excellent, in fact, that while sat on the top deck of the boat in the shade, enjoying the warmth and view out to sea, it made me realise how miserable I’ve been living in the UK recently. Its not just the weather (although I am definitely happier in the sun). Ive spent the previous 10 years living in places with easy access to nature/wilderness.
In Thailand, Indonesia, Norway and New Zealand we lived by the sea, and had mountains and forests near by. Watford on the other hand has.. erm.. Cassiobury Park. So I’m thinking it might be time to bugger off again soon.
A big thanks goes out to Yasser and my brother Simon for organising the trip for us, as well as to all the crew for making it a brilliant honeymoon. Simon also made us a really cool DVD, so we can now sit at home and watch our underwater explorations on the telly, which is great cos its just like real diving except you don’t have to put all that heavy equipment on and get wet. Probably.

Wedding plans are all going to.. er.. plan so far. This is one of the main reasons we chose to get married in Caldicot Castle (apart from the fact that it is a castle, of course) – theres not really a great deal for us to do as they organise pretty much everything. We had the rings made in NZ, Ollie had her dress made there too, and I had my suit made in Thailand, the venue sorts out the ceremony, food, etc, our friends are providing the music.. what else is there? Guests, I suppose, but so far they have all done a reasonable job of replying to our invitations (generally in the positive).
So without a great deal to organise for the wedding, we spend our time going away for weekends We were in Norway last weekend. Had a brilliant time – really miss the place. Spent Saturday getting pissed with Martin and Jorgen in Oslo, then Sunday skiing in the mountains. Hangover wasn’t too bad, and the fact that it was 22′C meant we were skiing in t-shirts
The weekend before Norway was spent in Cambridge, to celebrate Ollie’s birthday, and our ‘engagement anniversary’ (our anniversary list keeps growing – by the end of this year, we will have three of the buggers – a ‘getting together’ anniversary, an engagement one, plus the obvious wedding one). Still, always good to have an excuse to go away for the weekend (not that we need one). Cambridge was excellent. As it was Ollie’s birthday, her colleagues at work had bought her a couple of bottles of champagne, which we dutifully polished off in a wee Indian restaurant that evening. Cambridge is a lovely town, although I was surprised at how small it was. Lots of nice places to go out and eat and drink, lots of parks to wander through, a river to wander along.
Off to Wales this weekend with Alex and his girlfriend. Haven’t seen Alex since we were in a band together in Oslo back in 2001, so will be cool to catch up. More curries, beer and walks in the countryside planned

We have suddenly arrived at our last day. We thought we weren’t flying out for another 3 days, and we had left our tickets with our luggage which had been safely stored in a hotel in Bangkok so couldnt check. Emailed the travel agent when we were in Sangklaburi just to confirm that it was the 1st August that we were flying, then we were on our way up north again, but were so knackered after a long days travelling from Thong Pha Phum, that we decided to stop a night in Bangkok – checked our email when we got here and had a mail from the travel agent saying that we are flying tomorrow…
So our last stop turned out to be at a place called Thong Pha Phum, which was a nice wee town on the other side of the lake to Sangklaburi. Took a walk up to a Wat perched on top of one of those typical Thailand hills, which are mostly cliff with some jungle on top, rather like the Arazonian desert ones, but with hair. This one also had a load of steps that conveniently led to the top, and a wire that was used to pass things quickly up and down to the monks there (or alternatively provide another, much quicker way down if you want to avoid the mosquitos – we opted for the mosquitos). The view from the top was absolutely stunning – took my breath away. It was also slightly scarey, as it was rather narrow (around 5m), and had very tall and rather painfull looking cliffs in every direction. Ollie pretended to fall off the cliff for a photo – scared the willies out of me!!!! By the way, our Thailand photos will be appearing with the others (see photos page on this site) when we get home.
So now we are in Bangkok with 234678 tonnes of luggage (my suits added another 4-5 kilos) and a sore neck from carrying it all from the taxi to our lovely room just off the Khao San Road (around 100m). Really not looking forward to checking in at the airport tomorrow.
You might have noticed a suit reference in that previous paragraph. I am now the proud owner of 2 bloody lovely suits, one for our wedding and the other just cos it looked cool. Not entirely sure why i have ended up with 2 suits as i never wear the things, but am particularly pleased with them, and they do make my bottom look good (according to Ollie ).
Right, will sign off from Thailand now. Next stop – Wales! See ya there
