Life and work in Watford

Friday, January 26th, 2007

After what seemed like eternity of no internet access at home, we are finally online :) This also means that i have a mountain of emails to reply to.. apologies if you have not heard from me in a while (Ange - I _know_ I’m gonna get shit off you).

But the main news today is that i have got myself a job :)
*dance!*

I will be working as PHP developer for a big media company called NewsQuest, who do lots of local papers and magazines here in the UK.

Not only is it using lots of open source technologies (they run Ubuntu Linux on their desktops, and the usual LAMP servery stuff), but it is only a 10 minute cycle from home :)
So my worst fears of ending up as a .NET developer for a financial company in the centre of London have been allayed. I have officially started my software development career, and it is pleasantly free of Microsoft technologies (saying that, i quite liked C#, but i find .NET generally requires more code to be writen than should be necessary for any given situation).

And no longer am i a kept man.

I can buy my toys guilt free from now on :)
Which brings me onto another subject… bought a mixer the other day (this _was_ guilt free - used christmas money - thanx mum :) ). Its nice to be able to hear all of my synths at the same time again. It is a cheap and cheerful Behringer mixer (and lacking the lovely blue finish of my old Yamaha one), but its a 12 channel, 4 bus creature which means that at the flick of a switch i can route stuff out to my MV8000 for recording, and back again. Marvelous. (please excuse my amazment - this is my first 4 bus mixer - i previously had to do strange things with the aux send/returns to make it work like this).

Final bit of news, which isnt really news at all, but a continuation of the guilty toy buying discussion, is that i am now a proud owner of a Nintendo DS. Brilliant little thing. Problem I’ve had with computer games in the past is that I never get around to playing them - I’ve found that when I have been working all day on a computer, the last thing I want to do when I get home in the evening is get back in front of one. My music setup is a hardware one for the same reason. My DS allows me to play games where ever, which is brilliant cos it means I actually play them now. Been playing Animal Crossing for a month or so (and am slowing filling the museum with fish and fossils), and have just bought Advanced Wars (which is turning out to be an excellent turn based strategy game) to celebrate getting my new job.

Right, off to enjoy my few days of holiday before starting work :)
